　　在翻译过程中。原文“词面”上的意思大多可以借助工具书查到、搞清。但掌握原文字里言外的或深层次的含义往往依靠译者的阅读理解能力。而这是词典上永远查不到的。

　　In the process of translation, most of the meanings on the surface of the original text can be found and clarified by means of reference books, but mastering the meanings beyond the words or deep-seated in the original text often depends on the translator's reading comprehension ability, which can never be found in dictionaries.

　　第二。外语基本功包括词汇量、语法修养、阅读能力和分析理解能力等。译者掌握词汇量越丰富。一个词的词义掌握得越全面。一个词的搭配和用法掌握得越多。翻译起来当然会越快越好。译者没有足够的语法知识。如对虚拟式掌握不好。翻译时就会困难重重。甚至错误百出。阅读能力。也可以说是译者“化”入原著境界的能力;分析理解能力。指的是：译者根据语法关系。解剖分析原文。确切理解原文词和句子成分的意义及其相互之间的关系。然后据此进行翻译措辞的能力。

　　Secondly, the basic skills of foreign language include vocabulary, grammar, reading and analytical comprehension. The more vocabulary a translator has, the more comprehensively he grasps the meaning of a word, the more collocation and usage a word has, the faster and better he can translate it. The translator does not have enough grammatical knowledge. If he does not grasp the fictitious form well, he will have many difficulties and even make a lot of mistakes in translation. Reading ability can also be said to be the translator's ability to "translate" into the original state. Analytical comprehension refers to the translator's ability to dissect and analyze the original text according to grammatical relations, to accurately understand the meaning of the original words and sentence components and their relationships, and then to translate the wording accordingly.

　　3. Basic Chinese Skills

　　谁都清楚汉语在翻译工作中的重要性。这无须累述。但要指出的是：我们的汉语基本功往往不够。有时甚至还不如外语。

　　Everyone knows the importance of Chinese in translation. This need not be repeated. But it should be pointed out that our basic Chinese skills are often not enough, sometimes even worse than foreign languages.

　　汉语基本功一般包括：词汇量。语法知识。措词能力。组句能力。修辞能力和文学修养(包括古汉语修养)等。

　　The basic skills of Chinese generally include vocabulary, grammar knowledge, wording ability, sentence formation ability, rhetoric ability and literary accomplishment (including ancient Chinese accomplishment).
